ABOUT SARAH

Sarah Jaffe is a blogger, an independent political journalist, a feminist pop culture critic, and a self-proclaimed nerd girl. Currently, she works as the Web director/senior writer for GRITtv with Laura Flanders, and she is deputy editor at GlobalComment.com.

She writes about politics, feminism, comics, rock’n'roll, film, pop culture, books, and whatever else someone will give her space to pontificate upon. She has been a freelance writer since 2002, with work published in The Nation, The American Prospect, Bitch magazine, Bust magazine, Newsarama.com and many other publications. She has taught journalism to elementary school children and darkroom photography to college students, volunteered for three presidential campaigns, and covered subjects from Hurricane Katrina to superhero comics, the Israel/Palestine conflict to racism in unexpected places. She has been quoted by CNN on social media and protests in Iran, and appeared on the radio to discuss women and the Employee Free Choice Act.

In May 2009, she graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia with a master's degree in journalism. Her undergraduate degree, from Loyola University New Orleans, is in English, which she speaks very well, and she credits that city for forming her social conscience, shaping her love of music, and permanently pickling her liver. She has also lived in Colorado, South Carolina, and New York, but will always be a Boston girl at heart. She is unarmed, but still very dangerous, and can only be placated with large doses of soy chai and Cadbury Cream Eggs. In her spare time she enjoys kickboxing, getting tattooed, and making people feel very, very stupid.

Sarah lives in Brooklyn with her rescue dog and entirely too many books.
